Dr. Laurie Capogna

Dr. Laurie Capogna, together with Dr. Barbara Pelletier, conceived the idea for and wrote Eyefoods, A Food Plan for Healthy Eyes. Through their daily interactions with patients, both optometrists saw the need for a way to educate people regarding the benefits of good nutrition and vision. Developed over months of research, Eyefoods, A Food Plan for Healthy Eyes is a tool to encourage their patients and the public to discover the power of certain foods to prevent eye disease
She lectures to health care professionals and the general public on nutrition and its relation to eye health on a regular basis.
Dr. Capogna graduated from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, with her Doctor of Optometry degree in 1998. She is an active partner in Peninsula Eye Associates, where she provides full spectrum optometric care in a surgical eye care centre. She also runs a Low Vision Clinic where she helps patients with eye disease and vision loss to achieve their daily goals. Dr. Capogna practices comprehensive optometry where she focuses on all three aspects of eye care: prevention, treatment and vision rehabilitation. She is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists, the Canadian Association of Optometrists, the College of Optometrists of Ontario and the Optometric Nutrition Society. Laurie lives with her husband in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Dr. Kirk Smick

Dr. Smick is Chief of Optometry Services at Clayton Eye Center and an owner of the facility. He graduated from Pacific University College of Optometry and was drafted in the first Doctor’s draft by the US Army. After serving five years of active duty, Dr. Smick began the Clayton Eye Center in 1974 and continued to serve in the Air National Guard, retiring at the rank of Colonel.

Dr. Smick is a highly recognized optometrist in the United States. He has been awarded the “Optometrist of the Year” award for the state of Georgia and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. He has also served as President of the Georgia Optometric Association, the Georgia State Board of Examiners in Optometry and the Southern Council of Optometrists. He is a frequent lecturer in the U.S. and abroad and currently serves as Chairman of the Continuing Education Committee for the American Optometric Association.

Dr. Smick serves as a technical advisor to many companies in the ophthalmic industry and has helped pioneer several visual advances, including bifocal contact lenses. He was a co-founder and member of the board of directors of Omni Eye Services.

Dr. Smick has been highly active in community affairs. He is a past president of the Rotary Club and the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce. He is also a graduate of Leadership Atlanta, a prestigious one-year community service program.

Kirk lives with his wife in Atlanta, GA.

Ernie Edwards

Ernie is Chief Commercial Officer of InnFocus, Inc. InnFocus has developed a proprietary, minimally invasive implant for the treatment of Primary Open-angle Glaucoma. Ernie’s experience spans 18 years in ophthalmology and 7 years in the interventional cardiology/peripheral vascular industry as a part of management teams with leading technology organizations including Johnson & Johnson/IOLAB, Guidant Corporation, Advanced Medical Optics, and iScience Interventional. His leadership and expertise are broad in nature. His focus has been primarily in organizational branding, new market/product development, product positioning, new therapy market definition, platform commercialization, building/redefining organizational structure and sales/marketing team leadership, in domestic and international markets.

John A. Bee

John is a director of Rhein EyeSolutions. His leadership roles in eye care related companies include the following. Rhein Medical, Inc. is a leading manufacturer and marketer of hand held surgical instruments for ophthalmology and a contract manufacturer of micro robotic components for global medical device companies. John co-founded Rhein in 1988 and serves as CEO and Chairman of the Board. At Johnson & Johnson, Inc., John served in executive positions from 1983 to 1987. John was awarded “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the School of Business Administration at the University of South Florida. He has served as a member of the Industry Advisory Council for Ocular Surgery News, Ophthalmology Times, and Review of Refractive Surgery. He earned his B.A. and M.B.A. from the University of South Florida, in Tampa with honors. John lives with his beautiful wife Stephanie in Tierra Verde, FL. Stephanie is a prominent hand model. Charles Ficco, OD

Dr. Ficco has been an optometrist with Clayton Eye Center since 1997. He received his B.S. degree from Colorado College and his optometry degree from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Ficco spent two years at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami before joining Clayton Eye Center, where he serves as the Clinical Director, Residency Supervisor and Externship Coordinator. Dr. Ficco lectures nationally to other doctors on ocular disease topics and has written numerous journal articles. He is a member of the Georgia Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. Charlie is the proud father of two beautiful children, Brooke and Jack.

Clay R. Caroland

Since starting on Wall Street in 1981, Clay has worked with impressive management teams building innovative healthcare companies. Four of these companies are relevant to Rhein EyeSolutions. He served as a founder, developed strategy, arranged capital, headed development and served on the board of directors of these companies. Omni Eye Services, Inc. opened 16 eye surgery centers in 18 months in partnership with 800 optometrists and 30 ophthalmologists and was acquired by HCA. ClinTrials Inc. was one of the first global clinical research organizations and was acquired by Inveresk Research. EquiVision, Inc. operated eye surgery centers in 12 metropolitan markets. EQVN added value by integrating practice management, clinical research, and managed care services into its markets and merged with Oncology Services Corp. Pharmaceutical Development Associates / ClinSites was the largest exclusively ophthalmic clinical research company and was sold by its private equity sponsor. Clay earned his M.B.A. in Finance at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business and B.A. in English Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He lives in Nashville, TN with his wife Woo and two dogs. Woo has three cosmetic and skincare stores, www.wooskincareandcosmetics.com.
